*** The Emergence of Alcoholism As A Disease ***
(The contents is taken from the readings and writing of Dr. Lendon Smith. This newsletter is edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald.)** The Attitude Towards Alcoholism Has Changed A Lot Over The Years. **
The main teaching thrust in 1930s and the 1940s was that alcoholism was a moral problem. Our professors told us, a lack of control. Or another theory was that the alcoholic did not get enough sucking pleasure as a baby, therefore, this miserable soul must suck on a whiskey bottle and marry a woman older than he to satisfy those unmet oral needs.
The Alcoholics Anonymous devised the 12 steps to sobriety but still emphasized the moral implications. It was almost a religion. The single alcoholic could not fight the craving without help; he was too weak to do it alone. He needed buddies.
** How Did the Medical Establishment View Alcoholism? **
In 1804 a Dr. Thomas Trotter, of Scotland, wrote "I consider drunkenness, strictly speaking, to be a disease, produced by a remote cause, and giving birth to actions and movement in the living body that disorder the functions of health. The medical profession, along with the rest of society, has been extremely reluctant to believe that alcoholism is a biological disease. The earliest doctors to call alcoholism a disease were vilified.
** What Was The Churches Reaction To Alcoholism? **
The Christian church, which felt that any interpretation of behavior that collided with the concept of freewill was dangerous, ungodly, and a threat to the church its' moral system and dogma fiercely criticized Dr. Trotter. Consequently, Trotter's views were generally ignored for most of the first half of the 19th Century.
** When Were Centers Created For Alcoholics? **
It was not until 1841 that a medically oriented "institution for inebriates" was successfully established. By the early 1900s, there were about 50 medical institutions for alcoholics in America, but these centers were strongly disparaged by the powerful Temperance movement, the anti-alcohol, religious crusade that considered alcoholism a sin committed by weak and evil people. The Temperance movement led to the prohibition of alcohol in America in 1919, essentially ending the study of the biological effects of the substance.
** What Happened When Prohibition Ended? **
The medical profession again embraced the treatment of alcoholism, this time with the psychiatric branch of medicine leading the attack. Freudian-based psychology was just beginning to come heavily into vogue at the same time Prohibition ended, so it was natural that alcoholism would be interpreted as a psychological problem. Alcoholism had no obvious physical cause, and no known physical remedies, so most physicians were happy to leave the problem to the psychiatrists.
** What was the Psychologist's Interpretation Of Alcoholism? **
It was not viewed by the psychologists as a sin, but was considered a sign of a weak will interacting with a sick mind -- not a very flattering assessment for the patient. According to the psychological view, alcoholics were people with repressed emotions who drank to cover up their innermost feelings. The concepts of "drinking to forget" and "hiding in a bottle" became the most often-stated reasons for why people drank. Most psychologists believed that alcoholics would recover if they would solve the emotional problems that supposedly cause them to drink.

*** Noni Juice Floods The Body With Xeronine Avoiding All Problem of Withdrawals. ***
" When we take into our bodies caffeine, cocaine, heroin, morphine other foreign alkaloids, our proteins adapt to them and we change from our natural need of xeronine to an unnatural need of foreign alkaloids. The reason we get a "high" from taking in these alkaloids is simple. Because they resemble xeronine just enough to fool us, these foreign alkaloids still allow proteins to perform work....To overcome this difficulty and literally "cure" your addiction, all you need to do is flood your body with xeronine. By doing this you can avoid all of the problems of withdrawal. In order to accomplish this, one possibility is to place a few drops of a proxeronine supply (Noni juice) under the tongue with an eyedropper every hour. ... Doing this will release the proxeronine straight into the blood stream from the soft tissue under the tongue rather than through the digestive system where its release is strictly regulated by the liver."
(This information is taken from "Understanding The Miracle" based on a series of interviews by A.K. Olsen With Dr. Ralph Heinicke the researcher of Noni and proxeronine.)
