*** The Treatment of Alcoholism ***

(Taken from the readings and notes of Dr. Lendon Smith and edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald)

** First Alcoholics Anonymous was organized. **

At the same time that psychologists were taking over the field of alcoholic treatment, a large organization also began to contribute to how the public perceived alcoholism. This group, Alcoholics Anonymous, has enjoyed great respect and influence. Like the psychologists, the leaders of AA proposed that alcoholism is the result of a flaw in the personality of the drinker. The formula of sin, repentance, and redemption can be clearly seen in the AA s twelve steps. For many years, AA and the psychological profession were the only resources available for the systematic treatment of alcoholism. With few other alternatives, the 20 percent recovery rate achieved by these two groups was acceptable. At least general medical practitioners had some place to send their patients with the problem.

** How Well Do These Therapies Work? **

Since the advent of biological therapies, talk-therapies have been criticized for their low rate of recovery. In 1977, Dr. Peter Bourne wondered if "psychiatrists should have any involvement at all in treating people with alcoholism problems."

** Is Alcoholism a Symptom or a Disease? **

In 1979, psychiatrist David Ohlms told the National Association of Alcoholism counselors, " . . .as long as the mental health field insists on viewing alcoholism as a symptom rather than a primary disease that creates its own symptoms, it should keep its nose out of this field." The deputy director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the leading agency in the field, has said flatly that alcoholism "is not a mental health problem," and that the psychiatric approach is "not only the most expensive, but probably the least effective." Joan Mathews-Larson, director of Health Recovery Center, says that, "What we're doing is much more basic to their recovery. You wouldn't put a diabetic in group therapy and expect him to 'talk out' his disease. Yet this is what many people expect alcoholics to do."
