** Biochemistry: Who Is Susceptible To Alcohol? **
Heroin is addictive to virtually 100 percent of all people who use it for four or more weeks. Alcohol, however, is "selectively addictive" -- it causes dependence in only about 10 percent of all people who are repeatedly exposed to it. The addiction may take years, not just weeks, to develop.
** Who First Discovered The Biochemical Connection? **
Dr. Roger Williams was one of the first researchers to propose that the common denominator among alcoholics is their biochemistries. "When alcoholism strikes, whether its victims are male or female, married or single, charming or repulsive, moral or immoral, rich or poor, gifted or ungifted, extroverted or introverted, it always only strikes certain individuals, while others remain untouched."
** Is There A Connection Between Alcoholism and Ethnic Susceptibilities? **
You will be interested to know that among the ethnic groups that show a special predisposition to alcoholism are American Indians and Eskimos.
Why should that be? Eighty percent of American Indians have a biochemical proneness to alcoholism. They are unable to metabolize and eliminate alcohol as efficiently as Caucasians. The Indians and Eskimos have only had about 300 years experience with it.
Are you an Oriental and wondering how alcohol affects your race? Orientals have low rates of alcoholism because they metabolize the substance in such a way that the drinking experience becomes unpleasant. They get a sudden flush, and are usually intoxicated from small doses.
Or perhaps you're Scandinavian, the French, or Irish and wondering how alcohol affects your race. These races have moderate rates of alcoholism. It is possible that the longer an ethnic group has been exposed to alcohol, the more efficient is their ability to metabolize it. They've been using alcohol for 1,500 years.
And what about Jews and Italians? By contrast, They have only a one-percent incidence of alcoholism despite a high cultural exposure to alcohol. They have been using alcohol for at least 7,000 years.
It appears people with a high genetic susceptibility are eliminated over many generations, resulting in a lower susceptibility for the entire group.
