*** Is There A Connection Between Alcoholism and Heredity? ***

** Is It The Parents Or The Genes? **
In 1976, psychiatrist Donald Goodwin did a study of children of alcoholics who had been adopted by non-relatives. These children were 400 percent more likely to become alcoholics than were children who did not have an alcoholic parent. They also tended to develop their alcoholism early in life, during their twenties. Children adopted by alcoholics did not develop the trait.
Dr. Goodwin did psychological tests of the adopted offspring of alcoholics and found that their psychic profiles were indistinguishable from children of non-alcoholics in regard to depression, anxiety, criminality, and psychopathology. About all one can say about alcoholics in general is that "they like to drink." "The father's sins may be visited on the sons even in the father's absence."
** How Do The Genes Play A Part? **
Many studies have found the hereditary connection. "These findings suggest the importance of a genetic factor in alcoholism," Dr. Remi Cadoret, of the University of Iowa. Adoptees whose biological parents were alcoholic "were well on their way to becoming alcoholics by the time they graduated from high school," he said.
