*** A Scientific Explanation of Alcoholism *** Contents from reading and writings of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald

** How Is Alcohol Absorbed Into The Body? **

When a person drinks alcohol, 20 percent of it passes through the stomach wall directly into the bloodstream. The rest passes to the small intestines where it also moves to the blood stream. * Absorption is speeded by carbonated beverages, such as colas, ginger ale, or the carbonation in champagne. * When the alcohol reaches the brain it interacts with the nerve cell membranes, causing intoxication by blocking nerve transmission. When these actions occur, the brain is impaired in its ability to think clearly, process emotions normally, and to control the body.

** What Then Happens Scientifically With The Alcohol? **

* The blood with the alcohol then circulates to the liver, which breaks down the alcohol and removes it from the body. * It takes the liver about one hour to break down 1/2 ounce of alcohol, the amount present in an average alcoholic drink. * The alcohol is metabolized to acetaldehyde, and then to acetate, and on to carbon dioxide and water, which are excreted via the kidneys and the lungs. * The first-stage enzyme that breaks down the alcohol into acetaldehyde is called ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase). * The second-stage enzyme that breaks this down to acetate is aldehyde dehydrogenase.

** The Problem Is With The Enzymes ** * Alcoholics almost always have too much of the first-stage enzyme (ADH), and too little of the second stage enzyme. * The result is that the alcohol metabolism "gets stuck" in the first stage: too much acetaldehyde. * This chemical is a disaster to the body and the brain. It is highly toxic, like embalming fluid, related to formaldehyde. It causes nausea, rapid heart beat, dizziness, and headache. * It also interferes with the brain's neurotransmitters, creating depression, anxiety, and confusion, even more than the original alcohol. * Alcoholics do not have a problem with alcohol; they have an acetaldehyde problem. * It is the poison that ruins their lives.

** What Has Been Learned About This Poison? ** * It was in 1976 the Dr. Charles Lieber discovered that drinking alcoholics had much more acetaldehyde in their blood than did non-alcoholics who had also been drinking. * They could only break down acetaldehyde at half the rate of non-alcoholics. * It was an enzyme deficiency disease. * The drinking did not cause the deficiency; the deficiency was present all the time. The alcoholic inherits this enzyme deficiency.

** How Does the Acetaldeyhde Perpetuate One's Drinking? ** Acetaldehyde contributes to the perpetuation of the drinking in two ways. * It produces these intolerable physical and mental symptoms which are effectively masked and even reversed by more alcohol. Hair of the dog. * Also when acetaldehyde disturbs neurotransmitter function in the brain, it joins with certain brain chemicals to create an opiate-like chemical, called isoquinoline. This produces an euphoria that non-alcoholics simply do not experience. * When alcoholics drink, they go through a much more satisfying initial phase of intoxication than do non-alcoholics. Then in the later stages of intoxication and withdrawal they suffer far more devastating symptoms. * On top of that they must deal with both these experiences with a brain that is often confused, overwhelmed, and beset by biological depression and anxiety. The easy way out: "Let's have another drink."
