*** Why Do Alcoholics Prefer Alcohol? ***
** It's Their Biochemistry **
The biochemistry of alcoholism seems to dictate that they will prefer alcohol to other beverages. Excess of the neurotransmitter serotonin can cause anxiety, and that uncomfortable feeling will push a person to a preference for alcohol. "I need a drink."
** In particular It's Serotonin **
Repeated experiments have shown that animals with high levels of serotonin prefer alcohol to other beverages offered. If rats are depleted of serotonin, they will stop drinking alcohol.
** Craving Is Even Carried Through The Mother To The Offspring **
It has been shown that even moderate drinking by a pregnant woman can contribute to the onset of alcoholism much later in that child's life. "Years later," writes Dr. James Milam, "when he takes his 'first' drink, he may experience an instant reactivation of this addiction."
** What Else Can Cause A Preference For Alcohol? **
It may be possible to predispose children to later alcoholism by giving them heavy and repeated doses of medications, such as cough syrups, which usually contain large amounts of alcohol. (Nyquil Cough Syrup is 25 percent alcohol, which makes it five times as dense as beer. A "shot glass" of Nyquil contains about as much alcohol as a bottle of beer.)
