"Diet Can Lead to Onset of Alcoholism"

(from the notes and readings of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy Q. and Edward J. McDonald)

When Can Diet lead to the Beginning of Compulsive Drinking?

It can happen if the other risk factors are present: genetic inheritance, inefficient alcohol metabolism, ethnic predisposition, and prenatal exposure to alcohol.

Why Will A Poor Diet Cause One To Drink?

* A poor diet can create very unpleasant physical and mental symptoms, which people may attempt to overcome by drinking. * Because an alcoholic is nutrient-poor and caloric rich, alcoholics tend to eat poorly. * A typical daily diet of a chronic alcoholic consists of foods like coffee, doughnuts, salad, bread, spaghetti, candy, cookies, and alcohol. * So the unpleasant symptoms caused by the poor diet makes the person drink to feel good.

What Is It About A Poor Diet That Causes Unpleasant Symptoms?

* The alcoholic or pre-alcoholic consumes large amounts of sugar foods, little protein, and little intake of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. * This poor diet adversely affects the efficient metabolism of alcohol, and contributes to hypoglycemia. It is estimated that 90 to 95 percent of alcoholics are hypoglycemic. * Jean Poulos, Ph.D., in 1976 found 96 out of 100 alcoholics were afflicted with low blood sugar.

What Is The Connection Between Hypoglycemia and Alcoholism?

Most studies of sober alcoholics find that at least 90 percent have this hypoglycemia.

* A Loma Linda University experiment showed that mice on a hypoglycemic-inducing diet chose to drink the human equivalent of a quart of whisky per day. Mice on the same diet, but supplemented with vitamins and minerals, drank only one-third as much alcohol. * Mice on a balanced diet chose to drink only water. Alcohol will mask the unpleasant feelings associated with falling blood sugar. * Low blood sugar decreases the brain's ability to make wise decisions. The rapid absorption of alcohol is a quick fix for the blahs of low blood sugar. "One drink is too many and a thousand are not enough." * Men and women who drink take in about 20 percent of their calories as alcohol.

What's Wrong With Getting Your Vitamins and Minerals as Alcohol?

* This obviously replaces a good diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. * A poor diet along with alcohol prevents the production of the enzymes necessary to break down alcohol. * A Catch-22. The alcoholic cannot make the enzyme that would discourage his drinking. They need a high-protein diet from vegetable, dairy and egg sources. Glycine and alanine show a special ability to enhance alcohol metabolism. * Alcohol is a powerful anti-nutrient. It harms or destroys several nutrients that are needed for the efficient alcohol metabolism. Alcohol inhibits the actions of pepsin and trypsin, digestive enzymes. These enzymes are necessary to provide other nutrients from food needed for alcohol metabolism. * Alcohol inhibits the absorption of almost all amino acids. These amino acids are necessary to insure proper brain function, and are also of importance as coenzymes in alcohol metabolism. * Alcohol promotes the excretion of magnesium, an extremely important mineral in helping to promote emotional calmness. * It is also an activator of many enzymes. * Many of the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal are almost identical to those of magnesium deficiency: restlessness, tremors, confusion, anxiety, convulsions, and hyperventilation. * Calcium in the bloodstream is decreased by 200 percent after alcohol ingestion. The same happens to potassium, vitamin A, thiamin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, and folic acid. Gary Null writes, "Many of the symptoms of alcoholism can be directly attributed to vitamin deficiency." From Gary Null.

** Stress Also Causes A Person To Drink Excessively **

* An upsetting experience, a difficult lifestyle, or a chronic problem can also cause a person to begin drinking heavily. * Many alcoholics with whom I have talked, told me that a pain or loss of a job or a girl friend prevented them from falling asleep. They drank until they passed out, and then to stop the shakes of low blood sugar and low magnesium in the morning, they had another drink -- hair of the dog. * Once the drinking has begun, other factors, most of them biological, will perpetuate alcoholic addiction.
