Hello subscribers new and old. It's nice to be back from Switzerland and Italy. Had a great time and come back with a fresh viewpoint.

For the next several issues I am going to continue the series of articles we were doing on Alcoholism. Speaking of a fresh viewpoint - understanding what makes an alcoholic one and what we can do to help is a fresh viewpoint - and - it does change how we handle the problem.

** What Happens Physically In The Alcoholic? **
When the alcoholic's body has become fully adapted to the effects of chronic alcohol use, h/she is physically dependent upon it. Without it, he/she becomes ill. If drinking is not stopped at this stage, cirrhosis of the liver, cardiovascular disease, gastritis, ulcers, Pancreatitus, malnutrition, cancer, and a variety of toxic brain diseases may occur singly or all together, any of which could be fatal.
** The Hangover of an Alcoholic Is Different **
Pre-alcoholics have acetaldehyde hangovers, which are worse than what the nonalcoholic experiences the day after a drinking bout. The acetaldehyde hangover should be called something else, as they are so powerful and devastating: terrible headache, stomach retching, anxiety, insomnia, dehydration, sweating, and loss of memory. As the drinking progresses for the alcoholic, the withdrawal symptoms become more debilitating: convulsions, hallucinations, and delirium tremens. They are excruciating. The DTs are fatal in 24 percent of cases if not suitably treated.
** What Other Physical Symptoms Does An Alcoholic Experience? **
The malnutrition and hypoglycemia, usually present in most alcoholics, create anxiety, depression, fatigue, weakness, and possible deterioration of vital organs. The cortex of the brain is damaged in about half of all long-term drinkers. This damage may be permanent. If the neurotransmitters, serotonin and norepinephrine, are depleted, the alcoholic will almost certainly suffer from anxiety and depression. Nightmares and insomnia are frequent.
