*** Nutrition for the Alcoholic ***

(From the writings and readings of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald.)

** Where Do Alcoholics Start in Their Treatment? **

The first step in the treatment is for the alcoholic to want to quit. But, alas, in close to 80 percent of cases, merely wanting to quit is not enough. Will power and the help of others are not enough.

** Why Should That Be? **

What are their eating habits? Alcohol is a powerful anti-nutrient, and because alcoholism interferes with normal eating patterns, many alcoholics suffer from malnutrition.

** What Happens When We Don't Eat Properly? **

A deficiency of most of the B vitamins is common. One result is polyneuropathy, a weakening of the nerves to and from the brain that can eventually be extremely painful. Avitaminosis B causes encephalopathy. (Have you heard of that one before?) It is characterized by confusion and hallucinations. Memory loss and confabulation also characterize a vitamin B1 deficiency. (Get out the dictionaries!) Blurred and dimmed vision is another problem due to lack of nutrients.

** So What If the Alcoholic Takes Vitamin Therapy? **

Nutrient therapies offer a low-tension lifestyle and appear to be effective in 80 percent or more of cases. A support system offered by the employer or the family moves the nutrition-based program recovery into the 90 percent range. If the alcoholic is elderly, living alone, has no support system, and has extensive medical complications, the recovery rate drops.

** How Do Programs That Build Self-Esteem Help? **

James Milam of the Recovery Center in Seattle says: "We have a program that is not self-blaming. When we explain that they have an abnormal physical reaction to alcoholism, it bolsters their sense of self-esteem and confidence. They stop thinking that it's all their own fault and their own weakness, and begin to work on really solving the problem."

Prior to nutritional therapy, most clients had strong feelings of irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and lassitude, accompanied by craving for alcohol. After therapy, these feelings were substantially reduced, and in many cases totally eliminated.

* Most programs include in-patient medical detoxification, a three to four-week minimum of in-patient care, educational programs on the biology of alcoholism, intensive nutritional therapy and education, participation with Alcoholics Anonymous, involvement of the family, and careful follow-up attention. * The first few days of sobriety are the most uncomfortable. The liver and kidneys must process the toxic breakdown products, and the brain must readjust to functioning without the constant influx of alcohol. All the withdrawal symptoms are in full force, but these can be assuaged with nutritional supports. Injectable vitamin C in high doses helps. * Most clients get magnesium, tryptophan, calcium, B vitamins, phenylalanine, and usually a full spectrum vitamin and mineral tablets two or three times a day. They need plenty of fluids. Saunas and hot baths will help with the detoxification. * Personal contact with a support team is important, but psychological self-assessment is unwise and counterproductive in the early stages. Dr. Milam again, "In effect, you have a crazy person evaluating another crazy person -- himself. He'll think, 'Oh, no, now I've got to fix all these character traits in order to recover.' It's overwhelming and demoralizing. And it's based on an incorrect perspective."

** Does The Urge To Drink Go Away? **

The end of the withdrawal after several days of detoxification is not the end of the addiction. Long term withdrawal symptoms may linger for many months. Desire to drink may well persist. "Just one little drinkipoo won't hurt, will it?" These people need dietary changes, supplementation with concentrated nutrients, lifestyle changes, increased exercise, support from family, friends, and a qualified counselor.
