*** What Foods And Nutritional Supplements Work Best For Alcoholics? *** (From the writing and reading of Dr. Lendon Smith Edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald.)

** First - the Foods. **

Those low in sugar, relatively high in protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats. Little or no caffeine. The idea is to eliminate the swings of the blood sugar as the lows will stir up the feelings of anxiety and depression, and wouldn't a drink taste good right now? Five small meals a day would be ideal. (Remember what I told you about Stevia - the no glycemic (blood sugar level) index. It really helps here.)

** Next - the Supplements **

Finally, an opportunity to promote Dr. Lendon Smith's program. The Life Balances program can help the recovering alcoholic determine his/her exact needs by the senses of smell and taste. Most alcoholics find most of the nutrients in the program have a good or delightful odor and the mineral drops have no taste. Their needs are great. It would be wise to have the client get the 24 chemical screen blood test and the CBC to indicate to him/her and the counselor just how deficient he/she is. Most of their tests are in the below the mean area, except for the liver function tests. This is individualizing the supplementation program, and it pinpoints the nutritional problems.

** Are Nutritional Supplements Really Going to Help? **

"Oh, yes!" they say. In research testing those recovering alcoholics who received nutritional supplements reported great improvements in energy, mental clarity, and mood. Those on placebos reported no improvement. These drinkers are very deficient and cannot make up for the deficiencies without supplementation no matter how good the diet is.

** What and How Much Should An Alcoholic Take? **

David Hawkins, M.D., gives daily doses of 4 grams of niacin, 4 grams of vitamin C, 800 units of vitamin E, and 200 mg of pyridoxine (B6). He gets a 70 percent success rate with these supplements. But it is guessing, although it is an educated guess. Taking the supplements depending on the senses of smell and taste is scientifically valid, as it corresponds with the blood analysis.

** Didn't I Hear Amino Acids Helped Too? **

"Yes, you did." * The amino acid glutamine also appears to be of considerable benefit to recovering alcoholics. It is a nutrient for the nervous system, and commonly elevates mood and energy. It has been shown to inhibit the craving for alcohol in sober, recovering alcoholics. Dr. Roger Williams reports that rats that were addicted to alcohol stopped drinking when they were fed glutamine. 1,000 mg a day is the recommended dose. (Not glutamic acid.) * Phenylalanine, another amino acid, improves mood and increases energy.

** What Other Nutrients Help? **

Oil of Evening Primrose can be helpful in the early stages of recovery. 500 mg six times a day is about right.

** Will The Alcoholic Be Able To Drink Again? **

Any dietary program will not correct the overabundance of alcohol dehydrogenase, the lack of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, or the metabolic adaptation mechanisms. Therefore, very few, if any alcoholics will ever be able to drink even moderately. However, because of improvement in mood and energy, and because of the lack of craving for alcohol, this inability to be a social drinker should be only moderately annoying.
