*** What Makes An Alcoholic an Alcoholic? *** (Taken from the writings and readings of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy McDonald.)

** Is It One's Personality? **

"Alcoholism has its roots in chemistry, not personality. Over 200 research papers confirm the genetic basis of the disease. The emotional and behavioral changes that occur in alcoholics are the natural effects of progressive toxicity and deterioration of every organ in the body, particularly the brain.

** Does Talk Therapy Work For Alcoholics? **

"To treat the behavioral effects with talk therapy only, fails to acknowledge that much of the depression, irritability, mental confusion, irrational thinking, and cravings are caused by a physiological condition in the brain and the central nervous system. To establish a sense of well-being, both biochemical rehabilitation and emotional therapy are necessary. This holistic approach provides whole chemical health and a stable ongoing recovery." >From Gary Null.

** What About Nutritional Supplements? **

Because of the variety of deficiencies found in alcoholics, no one program is uniquely suitable for all. Some need more magnesium, some more B1, some need everything. Many need more protein. How does the therapist figure out the most appropriate program for the alcoholic sitting across the desk from him/her?

** Dr. Lendon Smith's Program Works For Alcoholics? **

The Life Balances program (Feed Your Body Right, Lendon Smith, M. Evans, Publisher, New York City, 1994) takes the guesswork out of the nutritional therapy for the alcoholic. The program addresses the specific needs of the alcoholic by the use of the senses of smell and taste. Most starting the program notice that most of the B complex vitamins have a delightful or at least pleasant odor; they are needed. The blood test reveals the deficiencies of albumin and protein, shows the damage to the liver, and the distorted electrolyte ratios. Most have some problem with the acid/base balance, and are suffering from moderate to severe alkalosis. In just a few weeks on the program, these deviations from the normal are usually corrected enough to make the client feel better, and even minimize the craving for alcohol. (The alcoholic never forgets how good that drink made him feel.)

** Will Alcoholics Ever Be Able To Drink Again? **

They can never become moderate social drinker, because that genetic tendency to make acetaldehyde ors suffer from hypoglycemia is lurking there in the shadows if he/she slips.

"One drink is too many, and a thousand drinks are not enough"
