*** Alzheimer's Disease *** (From the readings and writing of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald.)

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Dr. Alois Alzheimer diagnosed two patients back in 1904 with what he called presenile psychosis, because they were less than sixty years of age. They had memory loss, confusion, and often wandered away from their homes.

Can Young People Get Alzheimer's?

Most of us thought we would never get this if we arrived in tact at the age of 65 or 70 years of age. We could still get senile psychosis, but not presenile. Now any adult that shows memory loss and confusion not related to alcoholism or ingestion of toxic drugs is labeled as Alzheimer-like Dementia.

What Causes Alzheimer's Disease?

Autopsies of these people show tangles of nerve fibers in many of the areas of the cortex of the brain. There are also aluminum deposits therein. The Alzheimer's Association does not believe that the aluminum is the cause of the brain damage. They feel it is only a contaminant.

Some others feel that it is the primary cause. Whereas brain poisoning by the gradual accumulation of aluminum in the brain may well be one of the causes of senile dementia, zinc shortage may be important too. Lancet, 1: 8213, 1981. Zinc is a vital component of enzymes in the brain, which repair worn out cells.
