*** On Breastfeeding *** (From the readings and writing of Dr. Lendon Smith. Edited by Dorothy Q. McDonald.)

** Why Is It Better To Breastfeed? **

The kindly pediatrician comes to the bedside of Alex's mother's. He encourages breastfeeding. I see you are nursing. Good for you. Alex will have fewer allergies, better bowel movements---maybe infrequent, but soft and easy to pass. They will smell like yeasty bread baking in the oven. He will develop a better jaw line and have less need for orthodontia. Look at Pavarotti'ss teeth and jaw line next time he sings on TV: no crowded teeth, good jaw, excellent facial bones, and a good singer. Alex mother whines, But he is losing weight.

** What Do You Do So Baby Will Get Enough Milk? **

The know-it-all doctor responds, Babies are born somewhat waterlogged and they lose that and get back to birthweight by two weeks. Bottle fed babies get to birthweight in a week. Not to worry. If he doesn't latch on properly, a lactation expert can help. If he is nipple-feeding, he will get blood from your cracked nipples, and little milk. Sometimes after a rather tumultuous delivery babies will develop a temporo-mandibular joint problem and cannot get their mouths open wide enough to get the whole areola into their mouths. (If the jaws are normal, the baby should be able to open his mouth at least 3 cm. which is about 3 finger breadths.) Their gums have to press down on the lacteals and force the milk out and into their mouths. A chiropractor can do a cranial adjustment and solve the problem ---usually in one visit. Chiropractors should exam babies at each delivery.

** How Often Does One Nurse? **

Newborns grow at a terrific rate and need to eat frequently. I figured out once if a baby continues to grow at this rate, he would be 22 feet tall at 10 years of age. The trick is to nurse him every 1 1/2 to 2 hours during the day, and maybe --- just maybe --- he will have had enough so he will sleep 4 to 6 hours at night. It is a load on their intestines also. It would be like we adults eating 6 spaghetti dinners every day. You could place his crib up next to your bed so you can reach him at his first peep and not have to get out of bed. Many mothers will nurse 15 minutes on one side and five minutes on the other --- reversing the sequence the next time.

** How Many Weeks Should One Nurse The Baby? **

It is best to let the baby decide, but we have found that if a baby is breastfed for 10 to 12 months he is less likely to develop allergies, diabetes, or infections like colds or intestinal flu. Some one did a study and found that breastfed babies have a higher IQ than bottle-fed ones. Not much, like one point. It has something to do with the essential fatty acids in breast milk that is not in cow milk. The calf does not need to think, so Mother Nature did not provide EFA for them. Nurse, nurse, nurse, and don t start solid food until he is at least six to 8 months of age. Early feeding of solids tends to set up allergies to those foods and he may never outgrow them.

In another study babies were breastfed for eighteen months---no solids at all. They were well nourished, did not become anemic, were secure---not spoiled---and had soft, easy to pass bowel movements anywhere from one to five days apart. That takes some doing because at ten months of age or so most babies want to imitate self-feeding. They grab the food, smash it against the table and then eat it when they are sure the food is dead. (That reflex may have a responsible gene. Our ancient ancestors would grab a bug or mouse, squeeze it, smash it against a rock, then eat it when it stopped wiggling.)
