*** All You Ever Wanted To Know About Nosebleeds ***

The fancy term for nosebleeds is Epistaxis.
This is a rather complete discussion from a mother of a child with too many nosebleeds.
* Our daughter has had nosebleeds since infancy. * It was thought to be from the dry air in Colorado. * We cut out the dairy products. * We had her nose cauterized on a regular basis, every four months. * The bleeding continued and were occasionally quite severe. * When she was 13 ears old we moved to Wisconsin. * The moist air helped some but the bleeding continued. * At age 16 after a particularly heavy bleed, a nurse suggested the daily use of Citrus Bioflavonoids plus the temporary help from a nasal spray (like Afrin) that would constrict the capillaries in her nose. * Our daughter is now a flight attendant and has no trouble with her nose, despite the variations of air pressure that accompany her job. She continues the bioflavonoids daily and always carried the spray with her.
Dr. Lendon Smith, M.D. says of himself. "I have been a gushy nose bleeder. Therefore, I am an expert."
* I have had the best luck stopping nosebleeds with a wet cotton pledget squeezed against the septum by pinching the nostril. * Some people push a cloth or tissue under the upper lip, and then apply external pressure on this, squeezing the vein in the upper lip. * I have found that bleeding stops a little faster if the pressure is put on the arteries, arterioles, or capillaries supplying the bleeding area, which is almost always on the septum just inside the nasal opening. * I used to apply a styptic pencil (silver nitrate; yikes, it stings) to the bleeding area if the patient presented with an obvious area of engorged capillaries on the septum. * Then I found that many of these victims were bleeding because of a sensitivity to some food, usually milk. * Really bad, unstoppable bleeding requires the intervention of the skilled ENT doctor.
