*** An Introduction To S.I.D.S. - "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome *** (Taken from Dr. Lendon Smith's newest book: "Infant Survival Guide." Edited by Dorothy McDonald)
My Dad was pediatrician with a good reputation here in Portland. He died at age 60 years. He made a lot of house calls in the 1920s, 30s, and for a while into the 40s.
* In the 1920s a fluoroscope salesman told him that the cause of SIDS or Sudden Infant Death was the large thymus gland in the chest overlying the trachea. The belief then was that if that gland was large it could squash the soft trachea, and the baby would not get air.
* Some evidence indicated this might be a factor, as post-mortem exams showed little petechial hemorrhages, a sign of asphyxia (a lack of oxygen).
Dad bought a fluoroscope and suggested the parents to bring the babies in so they could be x-rayed.
* If the thymus gland seemed enlarged, Dad sent the baby and the parents to an x-radiologist for therapy. He was never sure if that therapy helped, but it was something to do.
The incidence of SIDS continued on. It seemed to hit healthy babies, or they might have had a little cold, although it was not serious.

It said, "The stimulant Ritalin, a drug used to help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may cause long-term changes in the brain, researchers reported on Sunday. Study shows changes in animals appear similar to those caused by amphetamine and cocaine."
It does also say if used properly, the drug is probably not addictive as those drugs are...We need to look at it more closely. (USA Today, November 12, 2001)
