* ADVERSITY LED US TO THE ALTERNATIVE HEALTH FIELD * (Excerpts from the unpublished book, "How I Move From Failure to Success In Solving Problems" Copyright 2001 by Dorothy Q. McDonald, B.A. B.S. M.A.)
Twenty-five years ago (1976) my husband Ed became unable to hold a job. We did not know what the problem was. We first pursued the traditional medical route but they had no answers for us. During our search we heard about an unorthodox treatment but did not have the confidence needed to pursue it.
Two years later our situation has worsened. We then heard of the same unorthodox treatment being given by another M.D. This time we were desperate so we investigated the treatment and learned it really did make sense.
The treatment was for those suffering from Environmental Illnesses. We learned of it from a woman who was allergic to the chemicals in her house. Ed had been exposed to plastic fumes in his work as a Plastics Engineer so we realized these fumes could be causing his problem. At the time we did not realize these fumes were causing spatial and sequencing problems and that was what was making it difficult for him to hold a job.
To make a long story short we made an appointment and spent several weeks as outpatients at this clinic. I also ended up being tested as the M.D. told me I could also find how to treat my hypoglycemia.
The testing was interesting. A minute amount of a substance was placed under the tongue and then the patient was asked to record any symptoms s/he might experience. The symptoms were burping, stomach ache, pain anywhere in the body, mental upset, depression, and so on. Sometimes the substance we were tested for was a chemical or preservative such as saccharin; other times it was a food.
The M.D. told us that there is a pH acid/alkaline balance to the body. Whenever the substance being tested moved the pH outside the normal pH range, symptoms of discomfort appeared.
While there we saw others who were being tested. They had mild reactions and sometimes severe one. One girl screamed when she was tested for a very minute amount of saccharin. It had affected her nervous system. A man who had just acquired a diesel-powered car found out by observing changes in himself his new car was his problem. They tested children through their handwriting or motor skills. One child's handwriting went all over the map when he was tested for the chemicals used in the mimeograph machine which was popular at that time. (1976)
Ed experienced symptoms when exposed to the chemicals in his life. He also learned his body was reacting unfavorably to molds of all kinds including, cheeses, mushrooms, and yeasts.
What does this mean for you? Two things. 1. You may be passing up opportunities to improve your health because you're not motivated or confident enough to pursue those treatments that would help you. 2. While you may think your problems are not serious enough to be concerned about environmental allergies, reducing your chemical exposure will take some of the stress off your body and mind.
In a future issue I will tell you how to find out what substances might be causing imbalances in your pH.
