Hypoglycemia and conditions it causes
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This comes from Dr. Lendon Smith's collection of 'Pithy Aphorisms'.
A survey of 100 phobics at Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston indicated that patients who had been through an average of
3.8 years of therapy still felt severely disabled. Hypoglycemia,
nutrient deficiencies, anemia, high blood pressure, and elevated
thyroid hormone may trigger anxiety attacks. Hypoglycemia: "The
devil made me do it!" I love that line of Geraldine. Flip
Wilson makes her say it when she HAS to do things over which she
has no control. "The devil made me buy that dress. He put a
gun to my head. I had to buy it." It is a handy excuse.
The 'Twinkie defense' was built on Dan White's low blood sugar
when he killed the San Francisco mayor years ago. An ex-patient
of mine robbed a bank on an empty stomach. I tried to shorten
his sentence as he promised to eat every three hours, but he was
stuck in prison for eleven years.
Hypoglycemia---not the devil--can explain depression, headaches,
surliness, hyperactivity, and some allergies and a lot of
criminal behavior. The brain needs a constant supply of energy
to function optimally and in a socially acceptable manner. When
police arrest a person for some crime, they should ask, "What did you eat
today?"
