*A Word About Our Last Issue*
One of our subscribers wrote to update us on some of our information. His email follows.
Dear Dorothy
Re alternative Health tips issue no 35. I would dispute the idea
that beta-carotene helps prevent cancers. Two very large
intervention trials in New York and Finland showed that
this provitamin actually leads to an increase in cancers apart
from possibly mesothelioma. However alpha-tocopherol may benefit,
the beneficial effect of ascorbic acid is also doubtful.

Alan Galbraith (Dr)

Some Interesting Facts on Prescription Drugs
(Taken from Dr. Lendon Smith's writings and notes he has taken
from his reading.) (Editor's Comment: Although some of this
information is dated the thought behind it is, in my opinion, still worth knowing about.)
Up to 1.6 million people are hospitalized because of drug
reactions, 230,000 people are injured, 135,000 of them seriously,
and 40,000 people die due to medical malpractice, which is now
the number one cause of all accidental deaths in the US, not to
mention inoculation deaths and injuries. MPl Dynamic Chiropractic, July 1, 1994.
It is typical for medical insurance to cover the cost of
expensive and marginally effective prescription medicine, while
at the same time denying coverage for safe, effective, and less
expensive natural remedies." Alan Gaby, M.D., Townsend Newsletter for Doctors 1992.
The two top poisons are chemical pesticides and pharmaceutical
drugs. 125,000 Americans die each year as a result of
pharmaceutical prescriptions. The John Hopkins Medical Letter
(Health after 50, March 1950). (Editor's note: That was in
1950. Don't you wonder what those numbers would be now?)
"A drug without side effects is no drug at all." Ely Lilly.
One out of every eight prescriptions written in the US is for a
drug that affects moods, thoughts, or behavior.
Pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to tell of this bit of
research: Their scouts look for formulas in herbal research
libraries. If an herb was used many decades ago the company
could get "grandfather rights" and, if all went well, could
market that product without spending the $50 million to prove
to the FDA it was safe and effective.
More than 40% of nursing home patients were receiving at least
one inappropriate medication, and 10% were receiving two or more
inappropriate medications concurrently. Alan Gaby, M.D. quotes
from the Ann Intern Med, 1992, 117:684.
Any symptom that a medicine can help has an underlying
biochemical abnormality. Diethylstilbestrol, Oraflex
(anti-arthritic drug), DDT pesticide), X-radiation for the
enlarged thymus, and the Dalkon shield, to name just a few of
more than 200 such ridiculous items that got an official stamp of
approval over the years. Government agencies assured us that they
were safe and effective. Gary Null, Townsend Newsletter, August, 1992.
