*The Who's Of Amino Acids* (Part 2)
(Taken from the writings of Dr. Lendon Smith, M.D.)
*Who Should Use Amino Acids?*
Using amino acids on a temporary basis for convalescence or for
those with extremely weak digestive abilities is prudent. If the
blood tests show low protein (albumin and globulin are both below
the mean) either from eating protein-deficient foods or from
malabsorption, the following deficiency signs may be present:
edema, nausea, dizziness, poor coordination, overall weakness,
anemia, cataracts, lowered resistance to infection, cuticles tear
easily, low hormone levels, impaired growth, muscle wasting. The
diet should be adequate to supply the protein needs of the body.
Many people have limited their intake because of food
sensitization reactions, but they may be jeopardizing their
health as protein is needed for immunity, allergy control, and
all the rest of the metabolism.
*Isn't taking Vitamins and Minerals enough?*
Eating good food and taking extra vitamins and minerals may not
be enough to "prime the pump" of the body's metabolic fires.
Therefore amino acid therapy is ideal for the person who has
tried everything and is still sick and tired. It can control
obesity in many. This is the reason that many nutrition-oriented
doctors use amino acid supplements for a month or two to get these enzymes working.
*How Do You Know If You Need Supplemental Amino Acids?*
If your albumin is below the mean this is an indication of
insufficient protein in the diet. Some people are eating enough
protein but their digestive enzymes - chiefly stomach acid - are
not sufficient to break the protein down into the basic,
absorbable amino acids. Then they need more in the form of supplements.
