*Causes and Alternative Treatments for Attention Deficit - AD*
(Taken from Dr. Lendon Smith's readings and writings.)
*Diferent researchers have found different causes for AD:*
>From Lancet, Jan. 7, 1989: the single most frequent cause of reversible dementia,
AD is the side effects of medication, especially multiple medications.
>From Tom Warren, 3850 Klahanie Dr., SE 19-201, Issaquah, WA
98027-7796. Mercury poisoning from fillings is the most common cause of AD
Some autistic children are mislabeled as hyperactive children
with attention-deficit disorder.
Dr. Lendon Smith is his notes talks about the fact that he would
drink coffee from the pot at bedtime and could sleep better.
This he said indicated he was one of those ADD people who are
calmed with stimulants. The Anacin worked on his headaches because it had caffeine.
*Treatments Recommended by Some Alternative Health Professionals*
Dr. Robert Atkins suggests octacosanol to improve brain function,
memory deficit, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, seizure disorder,
multiple sclerosis, and ADD. Annals of Neurology, vol. 16, 1984
If children with ADD have low whole blood serotonin levels,
supplementation with vitamin B6 for three weeks increased
serotonin levels, and, like Ritalin, showed trends suggesting
that it was more effective than placebo in decreasing the
hyperkinesia. 25 mg. of pyridoxas-5-phosphate or 50 mg. of
pyridoxine. The does is moved up or down depending on response
in activity of the serotonin level. Melvyn Wergack, MD.
Soc. for Neuroscience. Estrogen eases AD symptoms. Sanjay
Asthana of Tacoma. Within a week of using the estrogen patch, the
women improved, but those getting a placebo patch did not.
Neuropsychopharmacology, 1992; 2(2): 149-155 phosphatidylserine
is effective in people with early AD. The sooner the better. 1 to 200 gm twice a day.
Arch Neurology, 1992; 49(11); 1137-41, Acetyl-lcarnitine may have
a beneficial effect on some features of AD, 2,000 daily.
DHEA may slow the progress of AD. AD patients had a very low level of DHEA.
Thiamin Therapy in AD Metabolic Brain Dis, Vol.11, #1, 196 Oral
dose of 100 mg. daily had a mild beneficial effect in patients
with AD. Helped emotional or other mental symptoms but also
helped in intellectual function. There were no adverse reactions.
>From Greg Schihab, Ed, N&MH; Nicotinamide Adenine Dilucleotide
(NADH) is a coenzyme which occurs naturally in the body. Assists
certain enzymes in the removal of hydrogen atoms from molecules.
The NAD adds H, then delivers its acquired hydrogens to molecular
oxygen to form water. Dehydrogenase enzymes need NAD to dump the
extra hydrogen, and prepare oxidation/reduction. AD patients had
only 50% of the normal amount of NADH. Ubiquinone reductase is a
marker for NADH activity. AD patients improved and
acetylcholine, dopamine, and noradrenaline levels increased also.
