*Comments from our Subscribers about our last issue.*
We received three comments from our subscribers on *Nosebleeds*. One said he enjoyed the newsletter. A second said she had found vitamin K worked for nosebleeds; and the third said she disagreed with Dr. Smith and felt good foods should not be eliminated from the diet because the child needed the calcium found in these foods.

*Editor's Comments*
When we report on a particular subject we often present only one
part of the total picture. That doesn't mean that other parts of
the total picture are not good. We assume you - our subscribers
- are intelligent people who will take the information we are
giving you, integrate it with your own knowledge and experience.
take what works for you, and look further for information that
will prove or disprove what we have shared.

The experience of your editors does not necessarily support all
that the experts like Dr. Smith have written. They are writing
from their own experience. For example, I am definitely not a
vegetarian. But I know there are those of you who have learned
that is the only diet that works for you. We are all
individualistic and what works for one will not work in the same
way for another. The information we present in these newsletters
will, however, get you to think about what works for you.

*Tics and Magnesiuim*
(from Dr. Lendon Smith's Let's Live coluumn)

Dear Dr. Smith,

Our ten-year-old son has an irritating tic or habit spasm. His
head snaps a little to the left, he winks his right eye, and his
cheek pulls up. This must happen several times a day. He tends to
walk with his shoulders pulled up a bit.

We try to maintain a relaxed home environment, but his Dad is a
bit of a control freak. He is pushy; about high standards in
academic work and sports as well. Could our son be noting stress?
Mrs. Wimp, in Winnetka.

Dear Mrs. Wimp,

We all want our children to succeed, but the signs you write
about suggest that your son is unable to live up to his father's
standards. Some men live out their failed careers via their
children. Children should be able to live in a warm and
supportive environment. There will be plenty of stressors and
hurdles for him in the next decade of body-changes along with
academic and hormone challenges.

You may need family counseling. You may also find that your
son is doing very well and only needs some magnesium. Magnesium
is very deficient in our foods that we get from the store, and
has much to do with the metabolism of muscles. Try 500 mg. of
magnesium daily, best in the evening to correlate with bedtime
relaxation. Does he have friends? Does he laugh and smile more
than half the time? If so, he is coping. We used to stone these
kids with phenobarbital, but it made them ~spacey.

Tics are sometimes the psychosomatic method of dispelling
tensions that a person cannot express verbally. Let us know what
is happening. Sincerely, Lendon Smith, M.D.
