Physical Causes of Depression

This comes from Dr. Lendon Smith's collection of 'Pithy Aphorisms'.

I know a man who gets depressed whenever he eats or drinks
anything with aspartame (Equil, Nutra-sweet) in it. I know a
woman who becomes depressed if she takes extra thiamine (vitamin
B1). Another group of depressed patients was found to have EFA
deficiency because of an inherited enzyme underfunctioning. Many
people get depressed because they are sensitive to wheat, dairy
products, corn, or soy. Other people get depressed if their blood sugar drops.

Sensitivities to foods often affect the blood sugar, just as
surely as eating pure sugar. The brain cannot have a rash, a
cramp, or a gas pain. It can only have disorders of thought,
behavior, and perceptions. The reason for the blood sugar
fluctuations is biochemical, but the depression or other
manifestations are genetically determined.
