* Why Should the Shots No Longer Be Needed? *
Public health and sanitation must explain some of the changing statistics. In addition there are those cases where the shots did not work. There was an epidemic of whooping cough in Cincinnati in 1993. Four hundred children got the disease. Eighty percent of them had been completely immunized, and some had even had boosters.
* Has There Ever Been A Problem With Giving The Shots? *
A disturbing situation occurred in Japan in the mid-1970s. The health officials there thought there was a connection between giving the DPT shots at that early age (two to six months of age) and the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. (Those infants at two to four months of age have a poorly developed immune system.) They postponed the shots until the children were two years of age. The incidence of SIDS disappeared.
* What Do Some Parents Choose To Do About Shots? *
There is a growing number of parents who elect to forego these shots, and prefer to encourage the immune systems of their infants with breast feeding until age one year at least. They build the immune system with vitamin C. It is given at the rate of 100 mg per day per month of age. (The six month old would get 600 mgs daily; the year-old would get about 1,000 mgs daily, and so forth.) These parents report that even if their infant gets one of these diseases, he/she is not devastatingly sick, and, of course, would be immune for life. It is called a natural or cellular immunity, not just antibody protection.
