Is Your Chocolate Addiction A Magnesium Deficiency?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This story is taken from chapter 7 of Dr. Smith's book, "Feed Your Body
Right".
In this chapter the reader learns how Dr. Smith switched from the
standard, allopathic prescription-writing method to the shaky,
guesswork approach of natural, nontoxic healing based largely on anecdotal evidence.
Dr. Smith tells of a researcher, John Kitkoski, who called to see
if he was interested in participating in a program that had to do
with balancing the body chemistry.
This man he said made chemical sense. He said he was hooked when
this man told him that the blood tests correlate almost exactly
with a client's sense of smell and taste. If he tends to crave
dairy products, and calcium is low in the blood test, the person
involved will like the smell of the calcium tablets.
Most of these concepts seemed valid since he had based them on
solid chemical laws. Dr. Smith says he couldn't help but ask,
"You mean, if I crave chocolate, I need it because I have a
chocolate deficiency? I have a little trouble accepting that as science.
He countered with, "Chocolate has magnesium in it. If you love
chocolate, you probably need magnesium." A blood-magnesium level
does not always reflect magnesium needs or the amount of tissue
magnesium. But the GGT (Gamma Blutamyl Transpeptidase--an enzyme
found in liver cells...) is produced only in the presence of magnesium.
In general, the more the magnesium in the system, the higher the
GGT--if liver and biliary pathology have been ruled out. I had
been delighted to see the connection between chocolate craving
and magnesium. If the GGT test is low (below 25) in the blood
test of a person, she usually craves chocolate, and will love the
smell of the magnesium tablets. She needs magnesium, and not chocolate.
Stressors to the body diminish the tissue magnesium. Many women
will "kill" to get some chocolate before their periods. They are
looking for the magnesium, just as calcium-deficient people may crave dairy products.

*Something To Think About*
Would be interesting to know if some of you chocolate lovers
also like the smell of magnesium tablets. And then, if you do,
do a little experiment of your own and take some extra magnesium
when you crave the chocolate and see if it doesn't reduce those
cravings. Would be great if this works for and helps some of you.
Incidentally Noni juice is high in magnesium.
