Another 50 new subscribers this week. Welcome to all of you. Thank you for being our subscribers. It gives me great pleasure to prepare these issues for you each week. Since I am not technically minded some weeks I do not exactly understand the text. The details on arthritis in this are beyond me. Nevertheless those of you who are like me can still get the general gist of what Dr. Smith is saying. We can also be happy for the more learned among our subscribers who will appreciate this technical information.

*** Some Causes and Treatment For Arthritis Part 2 ***
taken from the notes of Dr. Lendon Smith, M.D.** What are the causes of arthritis? **
When a foreign substance enters the body it activates the immune system. Then the T and B-cells release factors that stimulate the synovial macrophages to release cytokines. The two cytokines which are believed to play a major role in Rheumatoid Arthritis are interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor alpha. These two cytokines produce collagenase and other proteases that destroy the cartilage. The factors that activate the macrophages to produce these cytokines include bacterial and viral products, immune complexes, complement components, and cytokines themselves.
** What are some treatments for arthritis? **
* Gamma-linoleic acid form fish oils is an effective treatment for active RA. These oils are comprised of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaneoic acid. They make prostaglandins of the E-3 series.
* Glucosamine sulfate is needed by our connective tissue. It is part of the cellular cement and is elevated in our joints affording protection against the destruction of the joints. The NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and corticosteroids inhibit necessary prostaglandin synthesis.
* Proanthocyanidins are plant flavonoids that have exhibited extremely high antioxidant activity. Free radical activity is implicated in cartilage damage and arthritis, flavonoids have potential to slow inflammatory conditions of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Flavonoids improve capillary integrity and stabilize the collagen matrix. Hawthorn berries and grape seed extract are high in proanthocyanidins.
* Bromelain has therapeutic effects in the treatment of inflammation. It can eliminate immune complexes that can be deposited in the joints. This action is similar to the effect Noni Juice has on the arthritis.
