"Heart Problems and B6"

(The following are notes Dr. Lendon Smith took on an article
written by Hattersley, Joe, J from Applied Nutrition, 47; #1,2,1995.)

*What Can B6 Do?*
Pyridoxine can cut heart attacks. In 1949 monkeys given a diet
low in B6 had arterial plaques similar to those seen in most
human autopsies. But the emphasis seemed to be on the role of
Cholesterol. Dr. Moses Suzman in South Africa put all his
patients on 100 mg. of B6 daily. His patients had far fewer
cardiac problems than would have been expected.

*What Evidence Is There of Heart Problems?*
77% of 300 American soldiers killed in Korea of average 22 years
of age had gross evidence of arteriosclerosis in the coronary
arteries. In several, one or more heart arteries were partly or
completely occluded. Same with US college students.

*What Is One Cause Of Heart Problems?*
There is insufficient B6 to prevent the tiny slots that start
arterial damage. Cholesterol doesn't damage arteries until
oxidized. It forms oxysterols when combined with oxygen. These
are carried by low density lipoproteins which are only the
accomplices to arterial damage. Homocystine generates
oxysterols. After we eat processed foods the concentration of
oxysterols may reach 1,000 times normal. Margarine and other
TRANS fatty acids which make oxysterols are neutralized by B6.

*What Does B6 Do?*
B6 acts as an antioxidant. It helps to convert homocysteine into
cystathionine using B6 as a coenzyme. Methionine is abundant in
red meat, milk and milk products. It is metabolized to
homocysteine. Men with high HC levels had over three times more
heart attacks than those with low HC. Men with three clogged
coronary arteries had higher HC than men with one. Fish Oil can
lower HC. Heart attacks have declined since the 1962
simultaneously with the increased use of B6.

*Something To Think About*

* Does this article imply that if we eat processed foods we
should be sure to take B6 - or better yet stop eating processed foods?
