*** The Whyis and Whereforeis of Schizophrenia - Part 3 ***
(From Content Provided by Dr. Lendon Smith)

** What Kinds of Things Can Bring On Schizophrenia? **

* EP Heleniak, reported high rates of schizophrenia in Celtic Ireland, with 12 /1000 population. Those Irish were heavy salmon eaters several hundred years ago until salmon became scarce and the English restricted salmon fishing.

* Some Irish are lacking in the EFA enzyme. Eskimos, Welsh, Scots, and Scandinavians. These groups have statistically high levels of depression, alcoholism, Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, and schizophrenia. They should return to the foods of their ancestors. Seafood also contains lithium.

* Charles Bates, Ph.D.,says Hemochromatosis can produce symptoms of schizophrenia. It is not an uncommon illness, hereditarily transmitted and associated with oral ingestion of iron. Ferritin is storage iron and in the brain can impair function. This can be tested. Deferoxamine chelates out the iron along with removing blood for transfusions. Iron is a powerful oxidant in the brain and needs to be removed. Symptoms: depression, chronic fatigue, anxiety, memory loss, and headaches. Other symptoms are joint pains, abdominal pain, tinnitus, heart disease, and disordered glucose metabolism.

* John Kitkoski (Feed Your Body Right, Lendon Smith, M. Evans, 1994) has found that the incidence of schizophrenia is higher in counties in which there is a high iron content in the soil.

** Are There Foods That Will Reduce The Appearance of Schizophrenia? **

* The proportion of people affected at some time in their lives by these diseases was about the same in all studied eight countries all over the world, except that schizophrenics are rare where wheat and manufactured dairy products are not part of the culture.

* High vegetable and fish fat intake results in a good outcome. Rice diet is helpful to the 50% level.

* Have you heard there is a connection between grains and schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is almost nil in highland New Guinea where practically no grain is consumed. There is a correlation between celiac disease and schizophrenia. It has been suggested that neuroactive peptides from gluten grains are a major cause of schizophrenia. Twenty percent of schizophrenics have antibodies to wheat. William Philpott, M.D.

** Can You Avoid Schizophrenia? **

While it's true you may have the genetic tendency to schizophrenia, studies suggest these things will help you to avoid this condition.

* Stay away from the common sensitizing foods: cow milk, grains, sugar and the standard American diet.

* Add the essential fatty acids, nibble or graze your way through the day and

* Avoid stress.

* If the tests show a high copper to low zinc ratio and low histamine levels, then a protocol of folic acid, vitamins C and B6, niacin, zinc, penicillamine (chelates copper), a high protein diet, and essential fatty acids as in evening primrose oil will often improve these patients thinking.
